“Navigating Digital Transformation: A Critical Reflection on the Advancement of Digital Technology in the Current Era”

Since 2019, a series of joint summer schools have been organized collaboratively by the Warmadewa University, the Lampung University, the University of Zagreb, and the VERN’ University. These summer schools aim to foster academic cooperation, cultural exchange, and
interdisciplinary learning among students and faculty from these institutions. The inaugural Summer school in 2019 was hosted by the Lampung University and the

Warmadewa University, setting a strong foundation for future collaborations. During the COVID 19 pandemic, the summer schools in 2020, 2021, and 2022 were conducted online to ensure continuity and participation despite global travel restrictions.

In 2023, the University of Zagreb and VERN’ University had the honor of hosting the Summer school in person, bringing together professors and students for a week of intensive learning and exchange in the vibrant city of Zagreb.

Looking ahead, the joint Summer School 2024 will be hosted by the Warmadewa University from October 21 to 25, continuing the tradition of international collaboration and academic excellence and supported by University of Zagreb, VERN’ University, and Universitas Lampung by sending delegates to fully participate in all in-person activities. This upcoming event promises to build on the successes of previous years, offering a diverse program that highlights the strengths and expertise of all participating institutions.

General Topics
The issue of digital transformation has drawn global attention for nearly a decade. Since the emergence of the 4th industrial revolution in 2017, there has been a tremendous advancement in digital technology, leading to significant disruptions in different aspects of our socio-political sphere. The Joint Summer School, initiated in 2019, consistently focuses on themes related to digital transformation. To continue what has become the tradition of this forum, the prevailing topic for discussion in 2024 is Navigating Digital Transformation: A Critical Reflection on the Advancement of Digital Technology in the Current Era.

The selection of the 2024 topic was determined by substantial and technical factors. Essentially, this theme builds upon the last Summer School’s discussion on digital transformation concerns by exploring deeper into the academic aspects. So far, digital transformation has been
shown to have many positive advantages. However, it also presents a number of complex challenges. These challenges include changes in the organization and structure of businesses and markets, as well as in jobs and work-life balance. Additionally, digital transformation affects how
people learn and acquire knowledge and skills. It also raises concerns about privacy, security, and safety, competition and consumer protection, mental health and well-being, information integrity, social polarization, and the fairness and inclusivity associated with various ongoing digital disparities (OECD, 2024). This theme aims to emphasize these issues.

The technical consideration behind selecting this theme was based on the diverse geographical origins of the Joint Summer School participants, with individuals hailing from Indonesia and Croatia, as well as other countries spanning many continents. Thus, this theme
serves as a unifying concept to facilitate the exchange of experiences and viewpoints among participants with diverse nationalities and scientific disciplines. The participants of the Joint Summer School 2024 will offer their reflective viewpoints on the difficulties arising from digital transformation.
